2003 UB 313 "The Tenth Planet"     09-05-2005/09-07-2005            12" LX200, ST-9 @ f/6.3.

Trans-Neptunian Object 2003 UB313 vying with Pluto in Size. The object's distance from the Sun varies between about 38 AU (1 AU is 150 million kilometers) and 98 AU, which is also close to its current distance. Its orbit has a period of about 560 years and is even more elongated and more inclined than the orbit of Pluto.

Sunspot Group 720     01-18-2005     Imaged with a handheld Canon 300D at 300mm f/5.6 and white light solar filter. Processed in Photoshop CS and Neat Image. Two days after this image was taken this sunspot exploded, sparking an X-class solar flare and hurling a billion-ton coronal mass ejection into space. Solar protons accelerated to nearly light speed by the explosion reached the Earth minutes after the flare, sparking a days-long "proton storm" with associated aurorae borealis.

Mare Orientale     12-05-2004     This rare glimpse of Mare Orientale was acquired in full daylight using my TV-85 together with a Canon 300D at prime focus. 1/400 sec. at ISO 100. Image processed in Photoshop CS and NeatImage. North is up. West is to the left. The upper image is full frame color. The lower left image is cropped showing only the red channel. The lower right image is 3-D rendered using techniques described in the December 2004 issue of S&T.
